Wondering where to find sunshine during October half term? You absolutely can, but by the last week of October, choosing the right destination makes all the difference.
While autumn is well underway in the UK, there are still plenty of places within relatively easy reach where you can swap coats and grey skies for sunshine, lunches outside and, if you're lucky, a final swim of the year.
The trick with a late-October holiday is knowing where to go and what to pack. Temperatures can still be beautifully warm during the day, but mornings, evenings and the occasional cloudy spell call for a slightly different wardrobe from the one you might pack in July.
Here are some of our favourite destinations for October half-term sunshine, plus what to wear when the weather isn't quite as predictable as midsummer.
Where is hot in the last week of October?
For the most reliable warmth without flying long-haul, look south. The Canary Islands, Cyprus, southern Turkey and parts of Greece are among the better bets, while Madeira is a lovely choice if your idea of autumn sunshine involves exploring as well as lying beside a pool.
No late-October destination can guarantee uninterrupted sunshine, of course. This is shoulder season, so a little flexibility and clever packing go a long way.
1. The Canary Islands
Best for: reliable warmth, beaches and an easy half-term escape
If sunshine is the priority, the Canary Islands are one of the safest European bets for October half-term. Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura all remain popular well into autumn.
Days can still feel wonderfully summery, particularly in sheltered southern resorts, although evenings are cooler than they are in July and August.
What to wear in the Canary Islands in late October
This is still very much resortwear territory. Pack a swimsuit, an easy beach dress or kaftan and sandals for the daytime, then add a lightweight layer for dinner.
A cotton or linen maxi dress works particularly well: cool enough when the sun is out but with more coverage when the temperature drops later in the day.
Pack: swimwear, kaftans, cotton dresses, linen shirts, flat sandals, a light cardigan or jacket and trainers if you're planning to explore.
2. Cyprus
Best for: the best chance of proper Mediterranean heat
Cyprus sits much further south and east than many of Europe's traditional summer destinations, making it an excellent choice for an October half-term holiday.
Late October is quieter than peak summer, and you can still find days that feel decidedly warm. The sea also retains heat from the summer, so swimming may still be very much on the agenda.
The difference comes after sunset, when you'll appreciate having something more substantial to layer over a dress.

Think summer clothes with one extra layer.
A loose embroidered dress is ideal during the day and can easily take you through to dinner. A kaftan also earns its place in the suitcase: wear it over swimwear by the pool, then again with sandals and jewellery for lunch or drinks.
Pack: summer dresses, swimwear, kaftans, sandals, a lightweight knit, a linen shirt and a pair of trousers for cooler evenings.
3. Antalya and Turkey's Turquoise Coast
Best for: resorts, warm days and a longer-lasting summer
Southern Turkey can be glorious in October. Antalya and the Mediterranean coast around Kaş, Kalkan and Fethiye often enjoy warm, sunny autumn days long after temperatures have started falling further north.
By the final week of October, however, the weather is more changeable than it is earlier in the month. You might have a beautiful beach day followed by cloud or rain, so this is somewhere where layers really matter.
What to wear in Turkey in late October
Pack for warm sunshine, but don't pack only for warm sunshine.
Longer cotton dresses are particularly useful because they offer a little more coverage without feeling heavy. Add a denim jacket, cardigan or light knit for evenings.
A large scarf is also one of those surprisingly useful things to throw into your hand luggage, particularly for breezy evenings or visiting mosques and historic sites.
Pack: cotton and linen dresses, swimwear, a beach cover-up, trainers, sandals, lightweight trousers, a cardigan or jacket and a scarf.
4. Crete
Best for: food, exploring and the possibility of a final Mediterranean swim
If Greece is calling, head as far south as possible. Crete is one of the better Greek islands for late-season warmth and has much more to offer than beaches if the weather doesn't cooperate.
Late October isn't guaranteed sunbathing weather every day. That's precisely why it can be such a lovely time to visit: cooler temperatures make exploring villages, archaeological sites and walking far more comfortable than in the height of summer.
What to wear in Crete in October
This is where a capsule wardrobe comes into its own.
Take pieces you can layer rather than separate wardrobes for hot and cool weather. A cotton midi or maxi dress can be worn with sandals in the sunshine and trainers plus a cardigan when it's cooler.
Pack: midi and maxi dresses, a linen shirt, lightweight knitwear, swimwear, sandals and comfortable trainers.
5. Madeira
Best for: walking, scenery and warm-weather dressing without needing a beach holiday
Madeira is a slightly different proposition. If you're looking for guaranteed baking-hot beach weather, we'd choose the Canaries instead. But for a beautiful autumn escape with mild temperatures, dramatic scenery, fantastic food and plenty to do, Madeira is hard to beat.
Its varied landscape also means the weather can change surprisingly quickly as you travel around the island.

Layers are essential.
A relaxed cotton dress works beautifully for Funchal, lunches and sightseeing, while trainers and a lightweight waterproof are worth packing if you plan to walk or explore the mountains.
Pack: breathable dresses, T-shirts, lightweight trousers, trainers, swimwear, a cardigan and a packable rain jacket.
What should you pack for an October half-term holiday?
Packing for late-October sunshine is really about versatility. You don't need an enormous suitcase containing clothes for every possible weather forecast.
Instead, start with pieces that work in several different ways:
A kaftan or beach dress that works over swimwear but is polished enough for lunch.
A cotton or linen maxi dress for sightseeing, long lunches and dinner.
A linen shirt to wear open over swimwear, with shorts or over a dress when the sun disappears.
Swimwear, even if the forecast isn't perfect, hotel pools, spas and one unexpectedly glorious beach day make it worth packing.
A lightweight knit or jacket for evenings.
Sandals and trainers rather than several pairs of shoes.
A large scarf or wrap, which takes almost no suitcase space and is invaluable on cooler evenings.
The secret to dressing for changeable autumn sunshine
Don't abandon your summer wardrobe just because it's October. Instead, change how you wear it.
A long cotton dress that felt effortless in July can work just as well in October with trainers and a cardigan. An oversized linen shirt becomes an extra layer. A kaftan that you wore barefoot over a swimsuit in August can be dressed up with jewellery and sandals for lunch.
This is exactly the kind of dressing we love at Pasha Living: pieces that aren't confined to one week beside a pool, but can take you from beach to bar, pool to spa and through the warmer months at home too.
So, can you still get a sunshine holiday in October half term?
Yes, but head south and pack for flexibility.
For the strongest chance of warmth, we'd put the Canary Islands and Cyprus towards the top of the list. Southern Turkey and Crete can still be beautiful but become less predictable as October draws to a close, while Madeira is an excellent choice if you're happy with warm, changeable weather and want plenty to do beyond the beach.
And perhaps that's the joy of an October escape. You don't necessarily need 35°C heat. After weeks of grey British autumn weather, a sunny terrace, bare legs at lunchtime and the possibility of one last swim can feel pretty wonderful.
